Participation of children and young people

Various international institutions and organizations have highlighted the importance of youth participation as an essential element in promoting a pluralistic democracy, based on essential values such as freedom, equality, cohesion and justice.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development reinforces this vision by explicitly recognizing that children and young people are critical agents for change and for future generations, and that it is essential to provide opportunities for them to acquire knowledge and skills in order to participate fully in society.

In Portugal, as in other countries, a number of practices have emerged over the last few decades for the younger generations to exercise their citizenship, which at their scale aim to contribute to strengthening literacy and democratic values, which are essential for facing the threats of disinformation, polarization and propaganda.

Aware of these dynamics, the Network intends to organize a collection of good national and international practices that can serve as inspiration for our members. See several examples of children and young people's participation in the Observatory.
